At the door

A man comes to pick up his son at his ex-wife’s house, just like every weekend. As always, he waits at the entrance of her apartment building for his son to come down stairs. Rescue the Fire

Berlin, 1993. Photographer and artist, Jürgen Baldiga, battles HIV. In the 1990s, the AIDS epidemic reached its climax, to which no one was prepared. Infected bodies and their stories diminish, erasing their existence. Through the death of his friends and subsequently his own, Baldiga becomes the chronicler of his time: "I am taking a picture. I photograph the world. I exist." Identity and history disappear without the persistence of memory. Until the final days of his life, Jürgen documents the exodus that seizes him. Rettet das Feuer (Rescue the Fire) directs the gaze to a piece of West Berlin history and the voices of the collective memory.

Es beginnt der Sommer der Liebe: herumalbernd durch die Berliner Nacht, Bier am Kanal, Gespräche über Sex und Kindheit. Alles ist wunderschön. Bis Ira diese eine, alles verändernde Frage stellt: „Willst Du eigentlich Kinder?“ Und dann tut Lenz das, was er am besten kann, wenn es kompliziert wird. Er macht sich aus dem Staub. Haltlos stolpert er durch den Sommer und begegnet dabei den Helden seiner Tagträume, die ihn ständig ins Kreuzverhör über seine Gefühle nehmen. Währenddessen zeigt sein Kumpel Kenn nur liebevolles Unverständnis für Lenz‘ Situation. Als Ira mit dem einbrechenden Herbst plötzlich wieder vor ihm steht, muss er sich dem großen „Trotzdem“ stellen.

Polly tries to avoid a confrontation with her roommate, tiptoeing around the mess in a kitchen that proves to be much too small for more than one person. The walls are too white, her anxiety is too great, and finally she feels too claustrophobic to stay inside.
